The humble onion is the delicious heart and soul of thousands of recipes! Obviously, this means there are many ways to cook them. However, roasting them is one of our all-time favorites! A roasted onion transforms from crunchy and sharp to soft and sweet. It’s like magic (well, actually chemistry)! Even so, these tasty bulbs won’t be winning any beauty contests. That’s why we gave them a makeover in this recipe for Onion Blossoms!
Onion “Blossoms?”
What is an Onion Blossom? Well, in this case, it’s a beautiful red onion that opens into a “flower” when roasted! Also, we cook our Onion Blossoms in the oven, with no carby coating and minimal oil. So forget about those greasy, deep-fried horrors available at certain steak houses ? – ours are much healthier and super tasty!

Do your Onions make the Cut?
These beauties might sound hard to make. However, with the right technique, it’s actually quite simple! First, remove the papery skin from the onion. Then, just follow these steps:
- Set the onion down on your cutting board. Use two chopsticks to hold it upright.
- Grab a sharp knife and cut through the middle of the onion from the top, down until the knife hits the chopsticks. It’s very important not to cut all the way to the bottom.
- Make a second cut in the same way, except 90 degrees to the first one. Your onion should now be in quarters.
- Finally, cut two more times to divide the onion into eighths. Your onion will now have eight wedges with an intact base holding them together.
Easy, right?

Into the Oven!
Now it’s time to roast the Onion Blossoms. Place them in a casserole dish or on a lined baking tray. Make sure the onions aren’t placed too closely together, or they won’t have space to “bloom”.
At this point, you can spritz the onions with a little olive oil. However, this step is optional (they may just be a bit less crispy on the ends).
Roast your onion blossoms at 375F/190C for 40-50 minutes, or until they’ve “blossomed”. They should have soft bases, with crispy ends on the “petals.” After that, there’s nothing left to do but enjoy this beautiful dish as a side alongside your favorite savory meal, or with a refreshing salad.

Ingredients
Instructions
- Preheat there oven to 375F/190C and have a large casserole dish or lined baking tray ready.
- To cut the onions, so that they “bloom” when roasting, follow these steps:
- Set the onion down on your cutting board. Carefully trim the top and bottom of the onion (don’t remove too much).
- Place a wooden chopstick on either side of the onion (with the “onion root” resting on the board), then while holding the onion upright, cut through the middle of the onion from the top, down until the knife hits the chopsticks (about 75% of the way through the onion). It’s very important not to cut all the way to the bottom.
- Make a second cut in the same way, except 90 degrees to the first one. Your onion should now be in quarters.
- Finally, cut two more times to divide the onion into eighths. Your onion will now have eight wedges with an intact base holding them together.
- Transfer cut onions to a casserole dish or baking tray lined with parchment paper or silicone baking mat. Spray with olive oil (optional, if avoiding oil) and sprinkle with a little salt and pepper. Make sure the onions have plenty of space between them to “bloom”.
- Place onions (and any other vegetables you like to roast) into the oven and roast for 40 to 50 minutes until the onions have “blossomed.” They should have soft bases, with crispy ends on the “petals.” Remove from the oven and sprinkle with fresh herbs.
- Serve oven roasted onion blossoms hot alongside your favorite savory meal, or serve warm alongside a refreshing salad.
Onion blossoms are best served fresh straight from the oven. Store any leftovers in an air-tight container and consume within 3 days.
